DIY Infinity Mirror: Easy Guide for a Stunning Illusion

Want to create a mesmerizing optical illusion that looks like endless lights disappearing into space? An infinity mirror is a surprisingly easy DIY project that blends art, science, and light. It makes an eye-catching room feature or a unique gift. All you need are a few basic materials and a little patience!

What is an Infinity Mirror?

An infinity mirror is a cool optical illusion made with a regular mirror, LED lights, and a two-way mirror. When lights are placed between these two reflective surfaces, they bounce back and forth—creating a tunnel-like effect that seems to go on forever.

🔧 Materials You’ll Need:

  • Wooden shadowbox frame (at least 1 inch deep)

  • Plain mirror tile (same size as the frame)

  • Glass panel (comes with most shadowboxes)

  • 80% reflective window tint or car tint film

  • LED strip lights (color-changing or white)

  • Glass cleaner + microfiber cloth

  • Scissors, credit card (for smoothing film)

  • Spray bottle with soapy water

  • Small saw (to make a wire gap)

🛠️ Step 1: Prep the Frame and Glass

1. Pick the Right Shadowbox Frame
Get a shadowbox at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep so it fits your LED strip. Choose a size that suits your space. Ensure the frame has a removable interior to help install the lights.

2. Disassemble the Frame

Turn the frame face-down, lift the metal tabs, remove the back, and gently take out the glass panel.

3. Make a Two-Way Mirror

Cut your silver reflective film to match the glass. This creates the semi-reflective surface that gives the infinity illusion.

4. Clean Glass Thoroughly

Spray both sides with glass cleaner and wipe with a microfiber cloth. No dust, no streaks!

5. Apply Reflective Film

Peel the film slowly, spraying it and the glass with soapy water. Carefully lay the film over the glass and smooth it out using a credit card.

6. Let it Dry
Let the film-covered glass dry for about 2 hours before putting it back into the frame. The tinted side should face inward—toward the mirror.

💡 Step 2: Add Mirror and LED Lights

1. Get a Mirror That Fits
Polish a plain mirror tile that matches the glass dimensions. If it’s not a perfect fit, many hardware stores will cut one for you.

2. Measure & Cut Your LED Strip

Measure the inside edges of the inner frame. Cut your LED strip along the marked lines only, and stick it around the interior frame. Be careful not to damage the lights.

3. Reassemble the Interior Frame

Carefully put the interior frame (now with lights) back inside the shadowbox, between the mirror and the glass.

4. Make a Wire Slot

Use a small saw to cut a slot in the bottom of the frame—just big enough for the LED wire. This ensures the frame will lay flat against the wall.

5. Install the Mirror
Place the regular mirror at the back of the frame with the reflective side facing the front glass panel.

6. Seal the Shadowbox

Push down the metal tabs to close the frame. Plug in the LED strip, turn off the room lights, and enjoy the infinite glow!

Final Touch

Now you’ve created your own DIY infinity mirror—a futuristic decor piece that looks like it came straight out of a sci-fi movie. Whether you mount it on your wall or use it as a conversation-starting table piece, it’s bound to impress.
