How to Fake a Fever (Safely & Convincingly)

How to Fake a Fever (Safely & Convincingly)

Faking a fever can get you out of an exam or meeting in a pinch, but pulling it off requires some clever tricks and a bit of acting. Here’s how to convincingly fake a fever, boost your temperature reading, and display believable symptoms—without going overboard.

Boosting Your Thermometer Reading

  • Run a thermometer under warm water until it reads just above 100.5°F

  • (38.1°C), but never exceed 102°F (39°C) to avoid suspicion or unnecessary concern.

  • For mercury thermometers, gently shake while holding the metal tip to raise the reading, but avoid shaking too hard or breaking the glass.

  • With digital thermometers, rub the metal tip between your fingers to warm it up.

  • Eat or drink something warm (like tea or soup) just before your temperature is taken by mouth. Hold the warm liquid in your mouth briefly for a subtle boost.

Looking Feverish and Warm

  • Heat your forehead with a hot water bottle or a heating pad (on low, with a towel barrier) for a few minutes to make it feel warm to the touch.

  • Eat spicy foods like chili or curry to naturally raise your body temperature and create a flushed look.

  • Exercise briefly or hide under a blanket to make your face appear red and warm.

  • Use a warm, damp washcloth or lightly spritz your face with water to mimic sweaty, clammy skin.

Acting Out Fever Symptoms

  • Say you feel cold, not hot, and bundle up under blankets. Add subtle shivers or a trembling jaw for realism.

  • Act tired and sluggish—slouch, lean on your arm, and keep your eyes half-closed.

  • Lose your appetite: ask only for water, tea, or something bland like toast.

  • Add a few sniffles, sneezes, or coughs to mimic cold symptoms, and scatter tissues around for effect.

  • If you’re not confident faking a cold, complain of a headache or stomachache instead.

  • Keep it subtle—don’t overact or pile on too many symptoms, or you risk being caught or sent to the doctor unnecessarily.

Faking a fever is all about subtlety and realism. Use these tips to sell your story, but remember: honesty is always the best policy in the long run
